When the history reads best
The rooms are indoors and the sites are not, which makes some seasons better than others for doing both in one trip.
Spring
Quiet roomsThe interpretive rooms are calm and you will have the exhibits largely to yourself. A good pairing with weather that is not yet settled.
Summer
BusiestThe high season at Fort Mandan and the Interpretive Center, and the easiest time for walking the river bottom and the village ground.
Fall
Best of bothCool air for the outdoor sites and low light on the Missouri. The strongest combination of the indoor and the outdoor halves of this section.
Winter
InstructiveStanding inside the log walls of the reconstructed fort in a Dakota winter tells you more about that winter than any label can. Dress for it and go anyway.
Hours and admission are not ours to publish and they change — check before you drive out. The wind is a feature — read that before you plan around it.
